Forget what most financial advisors tell you. There’s no magic retirement number. There’s only a retirement purpose. Take money out of the equation for a moment. What do you want to achieve in order to live your best life?
In my 30 years as a financial advisor, I’ve found the answer to that question varies widely from person to person. Maybe it’s to retire to a ski chalet in Tahoe or pay college tuition for all seven grandchildren. Perhaps it’s to have the best tomato garden on the block. The point is, some people won’t make it on $10 million. Others will be just fine with $40,000 or less. Oftentimes, a few small changes can make a big difference to your success.
So, what would your life look like if you no longer had to work for money? Let’s create the vision together. Just remember, time does not negotiate. The longer you wait to plan, the shorter the runway to achieve lift off.
What parts of your life are worth maintaining or advancing and which parts have outlived their usefulness? Let’s disentangle the belief systems and emotional ties from your finances. After all, money is simply a tool to achieve your retirement purpose.
